First of all, let me tell you that the choice your family made is a very good idea.
Because Madrid is one of the best places I would recommend. Especially at this period of time “March-April” when the weather is getting better not too hot as in summer nor too cold as in winter.
At what a accommodation is concern, I think it might be a good idea to stay in one of the half-board hotels there are in the center of the city. So that they can have a good combination of transport, bus, metro etc. And also where they can enjoy the variety of the tasty food we have in most of the restaurants around. They can also go sightseeing to the “Retiro “ a very big park to enjoy, casacampo, cibeles, plaza mayor …etc.
